fear protects us in many ways. what has served me is diving into my obliviousness. being more confident than i should be which everyone tends to decry american kids, and those of us who have been grade inflated and ego inflated. well, it can be a good thing if it makes you try you never might have tried. you inexperience is an asset, and will allow you to think in original and unconventional ways. accept your lack of knowledge and use it as your asset.

this isn't just false humility. it's false humility with a point. my case illustrates how success is always rationalized. people really don’t like to hear success explained away as luck —especially successful people. as they age, and succeed, people feel their success was somehow inevitable. they don't want to acknowledge the role played by accident in their lives. there is a reason for this: the world does not want to acknowledge it either.

so why do i talk about the benefits of failure? simply because failure meant astripping away of the inessential. i stopped pretending to myself that i was anything other than what i was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. had i really succeeded at anything else, i might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena i believed i truly belonged.
