ad是公元后，在西方，公元前是b.c.（英文before christ的缩写，意为“基督早年”）标明，而公

元后常以a.d.（拉丁文anno domini的缩写，意为“主的生年”）标明，如今现已变成通用的英语时刻单位。
b.c.和a.d.的词源是纷歧样的，一个是英文缩写，另一个是拉丁文缩写，这也直接致使这两个词的语法规划的差异。在英语语法体系中，时刻单位一般放在具体的时刻后头，如3 hours，4 months，所以很天然的，b.c.就大约放在时刻后边，如这句话：the great pyramid dates from around 2600 bc.大金字塔建于公元前2600年支配。这个词序是介词短语做定语用，方位跟在名词之后。
反之，a.d.是拉丁文缩写，根据拉丁词序，做定语时，方位在名词前面，如a.d.1025，和汉语的字序是相同的。这是最标准的写法，可是如今也有人依照英语词序把a.d.1025写成1025a.d.的。另外，如今为了简化写法，许多人会省掉a.d./b.c.的两个小点，写成xx bc和ad xx，这种写法也是正确的。
