achilles（阿喀琉斯），是希腊神话中的英豪，海洋女神忒提斯（thetis）和俗人英豪珀琉斯（peleus）之子，传闻他除了脚踵（heels）的丧命死穴以外，全身刀枪不入，诸神难侵。该习语的字面意思是“阿喀琉斯的脚踵”，用来喻指“a weak or vulnerable factor - especially one where all other components are strong”，即“软肋；命门；丧命缺陷；丧命要害”。

【闲话习语】
该习语最早源于古希腊神话中有关achilles（阿喀琉斯）的故事，传闻他的母亲忒提斯在他出世后捉住阿喀琉斯的脚踝将他浸入冥河中，以使得他获得不死之身，但因为脚踝没有浸没，所以他的脚踝就成了他仅有的软肋，最终死于脚踝的箭伤。
关于阿喀琉斯的故事非常长远，但该习语却直到十九世纪初才得以广泛运用，比方英国湖畔派诗
人代表samuel taylor coleridge（塞缪尔·泰勒·柯尔律治）早年在他的论文中有过这样的论说（1810）：
"ireland, that vulnerable heel of the british achilles!"
