在讲自然拼读之前，我们首先来讲讲汉语和英语的区别，也就是汉字和英文单词的区别。
当我们看到一个汉字时，可以猜出它的意思，却猜不出它的读音。但当我们看到一个英语单词时，虽然猜不出它的意思，因为它只是一串串符号，却可以猜出它的读音（个别汉字和单词除外）。这主要时因为汉语是表意文字，而英语为表音文字。
表音文字，即看到它的形就可以想到它的音。正是基于这一点，自然拼读才可以发挥它的作用。
那自然拼读和我们之前所学习的国际音标有什么不同呢？
自然拼读，即phonics，它是自然形成的一种发音规则，它主要教授英文字母（letter）与语音（sound）间的对应关系。简言之，就是根据26个字母及字母组合和本身的发音，以及不同字母组合的发音，找出相同的音源，做有条理、有系统的整合，帮助孩子建立字母与发音的联系，学习后可达到无需音标，无需死记硬背，见词会读，听音能写。
而国际音标，又称国际语音字母（international phonetic alphabet，简称ipa），是用于为全世界所有语言注音的符号系统。简言，音标就是语言的乐谱。音乐中声音是靠乐谱记录下来，语言的记录则是用音标。

学习过音标的人都知道，音标系统比较抽象、复杂、比较枯燥、而且容易忘记。如果在低年级学习容易挫伤学生学习英语的兴趣。
而自然拼读以更加直接的方式帮助我们来学习发音，直接建立起字母与发音的关系，而且自然拼读有丰富的教学方法，它更具有趣味性，更适合低龄儿童来学习。而且在初级英语中70%的单词在拼读时都是有规律可循的。一旦掌握了这种发音规则也就意味着初级英语中70%的单词即使没有学过，也可以正确的读出来。

? 一、由此可见，自然拼读的重要性是毋庸置疑的。
1、从听力来讲，由于熟知发音规律，因此辨别不同音节的能力也会变强，听力明显优于未学拼读法的孩子。
2、从发音来讲，经过一段时间phonics的训练，孩子朗读时能做到发音准确、拼读快速。从没见过的单词，可以准确拼读。
3、从阅读能力来讲，学习过程中，加入阅读课程，尤其后期，阅读课程广而深。由于能够顺利朗读，英语语感及理解能力相应提高。有拼读法的帮助，孩子词汇量累计快，单词量大再加语感及理解力，阅读英语文章及原版小说成为孩子喜爱的学习方式。
4、从拼写来讲，掌握好phonics，熟知发音规律，只要老师读音准确，哪怕学生没学过这个单词，不知单词中英文含义，也能拼写正确。没见过的单词，读出就能拼写出来。

? 二、自然拼读，它是有规律的，下面是自然拼读的一些规则：

2如果一个单词以e结尾，前面的元音发长音。长音就是该元音字母的名字。如a的长音发音为[ei]。
