university 的意思是大学，这好理解。但为什么清华是 Tsinghua 而不是 Qinghua，北大是 Peking 而不是 Beida 呢？
这是因为这些大学都是新中国成立以前创办的，它们的英文名都是按照过去的拼音起的，而我们现在使用的拼音方案则是新中国成立以后国家才颁布的。
除了清华北大，苏州大学的英文名也是沿用了以前的 Soochow 
University，中山大学的英文名同样沿用了 Sun Yat-sen University。
first tier universities

这里的 tier 是等级的意思，等级排在第一的大学就是一本。同样的，二本就是 second tier universities ，三本就可以用 third tier universities 来表示。而重本可以直接说 key universities，也就是重点大学的意思。

211 工程是指面向 21 世纪、重点建设 100 所左右的高等学校和一批重点学科的建设工程，于 1995 年 11 月经批准后正式启动。211 大学用英语表示就是 universities in Project 211。

2017 年，国家发布了一份高校名单，上榜高校将会参与国家的“世界一流大学”和“一流学科”建设计划。世界一流大学和一流学科，简称“双一流”。双一流大学用英语就可以直接说 the “Double-First Class” universities。
