1、Ifhehadn't,hemighthavefoundithardertoconcentrateondrillsthatmorning.
Mr.Dursley喜欢背对着窗户坐着，这样他可以把注意力都放在自己的工作上。尤其是早上遇到那么奇怪的事，如果不这么坐着话，他就更难全情投入工作了。
concentrate是指“专注，专心；全神贯注；集中（注意力）”（todirectyourattentionoryoureffortstowardsaparticularactivity,subject,orproblem）。
它既可以做及物，也可以做不及物动词。做及物动词时，后面直接跟mind、effort等词，表达“集中注意力、力量等”。
例：Ifindrunningconcentratesthemind.我发现跑步能使我集中心思。
而做不及物动词时，常与介词on连用，意思是“将注意力集中在某事上”。
例：I'mgoingtoconcentrateonmywritingforawhile.我要专心写作一会儿。
2、Hedidn'tseetheowlsswoopingpastinbroaddaylight,thoughpeopledowninthestreetdid;theypointedandgazedopen-mouthedasowlafterowlspedoverhead.
Mr.Dursley因为背对着窗户坐着，没有看到外面有成群的猫头鹰飞过，但在街上的人可是看到了，都在目瞪口呆地盯着它们看。
swoop，不及物动词，指“(鸟或飞机)向下猛冲，俯冲”（Whenabirdoraeroplaneswoops,itsuddenlymovesdownwardsthroughtheairinasmoothcurvingmovement.）。
例：Morethan20helicoptersbeganswoopinginlowovertheocean.20多架直升机开始下降向海面俯冲。
owlswoopingdown
inbroaddaylight是个固定短语，“大白天；光天化日之下”的意思（Ifacrimeiscommittedinbroaddaylight,ithappensduringtheday,whenitcouldhavebeenseenandprevented.）。
例：Thieveshadbrokenintothehouseinbroaddaylight.小偷在光天化日之下闯入这栋房子。
speed虽然常用作名词，表示“速度”，但它也有动词的用法，是指“（使）快速移动；（使）快速前行”（to(causeto)move,go,orhappenfast）。
例：Wespeddowntheskislopes.我们飞速滑下滑雪坡。
需要注意的是，speed的过去式/过去时有两种变形，一种是常规的speeded，还有一种是特殊变形sped。
overhead，副词或形容词即可，而做副词时，常放在句尾，意为“在头顶上（的）；在空中（的）”（aboveyourhead,usuallyinthesky）。
例：Aflockofgeeseflewoverhead.一群大雁从空中飞过。
3、whenhethoughthe'dstretchhislegsandwalkacrosstheroadtobuyhimselfabunfromthebakery
午餐时分，Mr.Dursley想舒展一下筋骨，就跑到马路对方的面包房去买面包。
stretchone’slegs的意思是“（尤指久坐后）散散步，活动一下腿脚”（togoforawalk,especiallyaftersittinginthesamepositionforalongtime）。
例：Thecarjourneytookthreehours,includingacoupleofstopstostretchourlegs.开车行程3个小时，包括几次停车活动腿脚所花的时间。
bun是一种“小圆面包；小圆甜蛋糕”。此外，像做汉堡所用的汉堡胚，也叫bun。
bakery则是指“（前店后坊的）面包房”。而“面包师”的英文就是baker。
