A street market that I have been to that I really loved was an indoorstreet market in Chengdu. Tho
ugh it was indoors, the reason I call it a streetmarket is because it was built to look like an old Sichuan town street. It wasamazing actually, and featured all sorts of stalls selling local produce,souvenirs, snacks and there were also eateries too. The whole indoor ‘marketarea’ was divided into different sections, you see: a vegetable market, a meatmarket, a fish market, then a crafts market, a small antique market section,then a street lined with restaurants that specialized in local snacks and famousSichuan dishes. There was also an area where there were small performances –people dressed in local costumes and playing instruments and performing skits.It was fantastic really, and it isn’t just a tourist site, it’s a great marketthat the locals also use, at least the locals that live in that central area ofthat part of the city. I enjoy the fact that in my city the local governmentshave spent time and money to design and create these kinds of cultural spaces,which also have a very practical function. Usually street markets are a lot morerough and dirty and not very organized, so this one in Chengdu was especiallynice, and I felt I had experienced the real flavor of what old time chengdumight have been like.
我曾经去过的一个我非常喜欢的街头市场是成都的一个室内街头市场。虽然是在室内，但我之所以称它为街头市场，是因为它被建造得像一条古老的四川城镇街道。事实上，它非常令人惊奇，有各种各样的摊位，出售当地的农产品、纪念品、小吃，也有一些餐馆。整个室内"市场区"被分为不同的部分，你看：一个蔬菜市场，一个肉类市场，一个鱼类市场，然后是一个工艺品市场，一个小的古董市场部分，然后是一条街道，两旁是专门经营当地小吃和著名川菜的餐馆。还有一个区域，那里有小型表演--人们穿着当地的服装，演奏乐器，表演小品。这真的很奇妙，它不仅仅是一个旅游景点，它是一个很好的市场，当地人也经常去，至少是住在城市那一部分中心区域的当地人。我喜欢这样一个事实：在我的城市，当地政府花费时间和金钱来设计和创造这类文化空间，这也有一个非常实用的功能。通常情况下，街头市场都是比较粗糙和肮脏的，没有什么组织性，所以成都的这个市场特别好，我觉得我体验到了旧时代成都可能是什么样的真实味道。
